As Habitat for Humanity marks its 50th anniversary, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project returned to Atlanta for the first time since 1988. From May 3-8, more than 1,000 volunteers came together to build 24 homes in just five days, launching Langston Park — Atlanta Habitat's newest affordable housing community in the historic Sylvan Hills neighborhood.

Beginning in 1984, President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter helped build a global movement rooted in service and community. Over four decades, the Carter Work Project has mobilized more than 109,000 volunteers to build, renovate or repair thousands of homes worldwide. Now, in its 40th year, that legacy continued in Atlanta. The Project remains a bridge between its founding vision and Habitat's modern mission carrying forward a message of service, unity and nonpartisan impact.

As the U.S. faces a critical housing shortage, this build underscores both the urgency of the crisis and the power of people coming together to create lasting change. Home is the foundation on which we build our lives, but every day 1 in 3 people around the world wake up without the security of safe, affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is working to change that, knowing that every safe, affordable home allows a family to pursue better health, education and employment outcomes.

That's why Habitat has helped more than 65 million people around the world build, improve or finance places to call home for more than 50 years. Together with supporters, they've built a mission — and a movement. Now, they're building on that momentum. Habitat recently launched Let's Open the Door, a global campaign aimed to bring urgency to housing issues worldwide. Through hands-on builds, pop-up exhibits, compelling new research and powerful storytelling, they're bringing housing to the center stage at a global scale. Because with safe, stable housing, families have the freedom to focus on what matters most, empowering them to build their future on their own terms.
