Safety Is the Name of the Game When It Comes to Your Eyes

(ARA) - Contact lenses have been in the news a lot lately, especially with the recent outbreak of a rare and potentially blinding eye infection called fungal keratitis. Many of the more than 30 million Americans who wear contact lenses may be asking if this form of vision correction is still safe.

According to Jenny Smythe, O.D., M.S., F.A.A.O, professor of optometry at the Pacific University College of Optometry, today's contact lenses are a very safe form of vision correction when used as directed by an eye care professional and in conjunction with a trusted brand of contact lens solution.

"Today we're seeing some of the most revolutionary lens materials ever, which are designed to be healthier for the eye and much more comfortable for the wearer," says Dr. Smythe. "If you couldn't wear contact lenses in the past - or if you stopped wearing them because of discomfort - you should have another talk with your eye doctor. You might be surprised at how well the new lenses fit and feel."

As with any piece of medical technology, Dr. Smythe advises, contact lens wearers should follow a few safety tips to ensure their lenses perform at their best and give the wearer maximum comfort. "A little common sense goes a long way when handling contact lenses," says Dr. Smythe, "but there are a few things that people can do to get the most out of their lenses."

Use Proper Hygiene

"I still have to remind my patients to wash their hands before touching their lenses. You wouldn't put a dirty finger in your eye, and you shouldn't handle your lenses with dirty hands either," says Smythe.

She also advises patients to never put lenses in their mouth or share lenses among friends. "This is something you commonly see among teenagers, and it is not a good habit to get into." It is also very important to replace your solution in the case every day and never re-use old solution. Only store lenses in a clean case and replace the case at least every three months, according the instructions provided by your eye care professional.

Use the Recommended Solution

It is important for patients to continue to use the lens and solution combination recommended by their eye care professional. "If you do not use the lenses and solution recommended by your eye care professional you may not achieve an optimal lens wearing experience," says Dr. Smythe. "I recommend that my patients use OPTI-FREE RepleniSH Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution because it works well with today's lenses and enhances patient comfort. I also tell them to be careful of generic store-brand solutions," she adds. "Even though you might save a dollar or two, it is difficult to know what solutions are in those bottles, and how old that technology might be. With today's advanced, 'breathable' silicone hydrogel lenses, it helps to have the most advanced solutions."

Listen to Your Eyes

"I have a number of patients who continue to wear their contact lenses despite the pain and excessive tearing associated with over wear," says Dr. Smythe. "Sometimes your eyes just need a break from your lenses, and even if your eye doctor tells you it's okay to wear your lenses overnight, your eyes might be telling you otherwise. I'd listen to your eyes first, and consult your eye care professional if you do not feel better immediately."

See an Eye Doctor Regularly

"Most people visit their dentist every six months, but many put off seeing an eye doctor for years," says Dr. Smythe. "I recommend to my patients that they get a routine eye exam once a year. But they should not hesitate if they notice any changes in their vision, pain, redness or other irritations. Most eye infections can be treated and safely resolved, but early treatment is the key. Waiting too long can compromise the health of your eyes and potentially your vision."
